NEWS: CIRASIM Presented at the Croatian Ports Days Conference in Zadar

During the “Croatian Ports Days” conference, held from March 25–28, 2026 in Zadar at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Professor Dino Županović from the Maritime Department of the University of Zadar presented the CIRASIM project.

The presentation took place within the session “Cooperation Without Borders: European Ports and EU Projects”. CIRASIM is implemented under the Interreg ADRION Programme, with the University of Zadar as the lead partner, together with 7 partners from Serbia, Italy, North Macedonia, Albania, and Croatia.

The project focuses on Cold Ironing technology, enabling ships at berth to use shore-side electricity, allowing auxiliary engines to be switched off and significantly reducing harmful emissions.

The project started in September 2024 and will run until August 2027.

Supporting Greener Port Development

The presentation highlighted the importance of sustainable and environmentally responsible solutions in modern port operations.

Cold Ironing systems contribute to:

  • Reduced CO₂ emissions
  • Improved air quality in port cities
  • Lower noise levels in surrounding communities

As maritime transport continues to grow, ports across the Adriatic-Ionian region are increasingly focusing on sustainable infrastructure and green transition initiatives.

A Regional Cooperation Initiative

Through cooperation between academic institutions, port authorities, and regional stakeholders, CIRASIM supports the development of more sustainable and resilient ports.

The project promotes innovation, environmental monitoring, and long-term strategic planning as key elements in shaping the future of maritime transport in the region.
